Southern Charmed

This little beauty has great texture.  The 'bumps' on it reminded me of some of the historic streets in Charleston, Sc.

Materials:  
*Bulky yarn (I used 2 strands of Red Heart w/Love)
*P (11.5mm) Hook
*Scissors
*Yarn Needle
*Button (I used a 1.5" coconut button)

Measures:  Approx. 35" long x 11" wide.  I crochet loosely so your measurements may be different.

Pattern:  
*Ch.24
*Row 1 *  2Dc in 3rd Ch. from hook.  Including turning chain, you will have 3Dc.  Skip the next 2 chains.  In the next chain, crochet 1Sc and 2Dc into the same chain.  Repeat this pattern until the last chain.  In the last chain, Sc only.
*Row 2 * Turn work.  Ch.2.  Do 2Dc 3rd Ch. from hook.  (the Sc space from previous round).  Crochet 1Sc and 2Dc into the Sc spaces from the previous round until you reach the last Sc.  Sc only into the previous Sc.
*Rows 3 - 43*  Repeat Row 2.   Ch.1.  Bind off, sew in ends.
*Add Button.

Square'd Space

I love this cowl.  I love the squares and I love wearing this folded in half.   This piece works up so quickly that you will feel as if it took you 5 minutes to create it.

Also, This is another one of those very forgiving patterns where you can use worsted weight yarn, chunky yarn or even 2 & 3 strands of yarn together.  Just use recommended hook size for the yarn you choose.

The cream colored cowl is made using Loops & Threads Cozy Wool.  The red colored cowl is made using Red Heart w/Love yarn.

I added 2 buttons to the cowls, but honestly, you really only need one. If you have a giant button, use it, the squares will accommodate it.

Materials:
*Chunky Yarn
*P (11.5 mm) Hook
*2" Button(s)
*Scissors
*Yarn Needle

Pattern:  
*Row 1 --  22 Dc Chainless Foundation
(Ch. 22 plus 2 chains.  Dc into 3rd from hook and ea. ch. across)
*Row 2 - Turn work, Ch.2.  Dc into 4th Ch. from hook.  1 Dc into ea. of the next 2 stitches.  (you will have 3 double crochets including turning chain).  Ch.2.  Skip 2 Stitches.  1Dc into ea. of the next 5 Stitches.  Ch.2, skip 2 stitches.  Dc into ea. of the next 5 Stitches.  Ch.2, Dc into ea. into last 3 Stitches.
*Row 3 - Turn work. Ch.2.  Double crochet into 4th Ch. from hook.  1Dc into next  5 Stitches.  Ch. 2.  1Dc ea. into last 3 Stitches.
Rows 4-36 (or desired length) Repeat row 3.  Ch.1. Bind off, sew in ends.
**Add Buttons.

**If you do a chainless foundation, I think it looks pretty to add a final row of HDc's before binding off.

Easy Peasy Cowl

This is very much like Carolina Cowl, but this is one is made using a chainless foundation.  

I love the versatility of this cowl.  You can crochet it as wide and long as you wish.  Both half double crochet in the back loops and double crochet in the back loops looks great with this cowl.

Materials:

*#5 or #6 Bulky Yarn (approx. 170 yards)

*Hook size of choice

*Scissors

*Yarn Needle

* 3 or 4, 1.5" - 2" Buttons

Pattern:

*Row 1 - Using the chainless foundation, work 56 Double Crochets.

*Rows 2 - 10 - (or desired length) Turn work.  Ch. 2, (turning chain counts as a stitch) DcBL (double crochet into back loops) into 3rd ch. from hook and in each previous Dc across.  At the end of row 10, ch. 1 and bind off. 

*Add buttons.  

This cowl also looks pretty folded in half.  

***To decide button placement.... Place the cowl over your shoulders like a scarf.  Decide if you want the buttons to be on your left or right.  You will place the buttons on the outer edge of the cowl.  If you decide for them to be on your right, grab the inside left corner, closest to your neck, and pull it to the top right outer portion of your shoulder.  This will be your first button placement.  Use a stitch marker or strand of yarn to mark button placement.  Your next button placement will be at the bottom right outer corner.  Then you place the last 1 or 2 buttons equal distance from the first two buttons.

Lofty Loops Neckwarmer

This Neckwarmer is made by using the "V" stitch.  It is so super easy to create, that you can have it made and another one started in less than 1 hour.

Materials:
*#6 Bulky Yarn (approx. 90 yards)
*N - 9 mm Hook
*Yarn Needle
*Scissors

Pattern: 
*Ch. 53
*Row 1 - Dc in 4th from hook.  Ch. 1.  Dc into same stitch.  Skip 2 chains.  Repeat  *Dc, Ch.1, Dc, Sk. 2* until next to last chain.  In last Ch.  space, Dc.
*Row 2 -  Turn work, Ch. 3, Repeat *Dc, Ch1, Dc, Sk2* into the V space of  the previous row of Dc.
*Rows 3 - 8 - Repeat row 2.  At the end of row 8, Ch.1,  Before you bind  off, leave a long enough tail to whip stitch your work together.  Sew in the  ends.  Turn your work inside out.  The finished seam will be on the inside  of your work.

***Dc, Ch.1, Dc, into the same stitch is your "V" stitch.

***Another version if this pattern.  Begin with a single crochet chainless foundation.  After row 8, Ch.1. Sc across til the end.  Ch.1. Leave a long tail, sew work together.

The Carolina Cowl

Have you seen those Harbor Cowls online and wanted to make one?  I fell in love with the look so much that I came up with my own similar looking pattern.  

I hope you love the pattern as much as I.  You can easily alter this pattern to come up with a length and width that works for you. 

For this pattern, I used Lion Brand's WoolSpun #5 bulky yarn, but you can easily use a #6 bulky yarn.  I have seen some supporting their team colors by combining together 2 & 3 strands of worsted weight yarn.

*3 Buttons - approx. 1.5" - 2" Wide

Pattern: 

*Ch. 66

*Row 1 - Sc in 2nd Ch. from hook and in ea. Ch. across.

*Row 2 - Turn work.  Ch 2.  Hdc in the BL (back loops) in the 3rd Ch.  from hook and in ea. Sc across until you get to the last Sc.  In the last Sc  space (not the back loop) Hdc into that space.  

*Rows 3 - 13 Turn work.  Ch. 2.  Hdc in BL in 3rd Ch. from hook and in ea.  Hdc across until the last loop.  Hdc into the space.  

 At this point you can bind off, sew in ends and add buttons.

 I added another row.  (row 14).  Turn work.  Ch. 1,  Sc in ea. Hdc across.  

**I always like to Chain 1 at the end of my work.  I feel it creates a  smoother finish when sewing in the tail.
